What Is the Feldenkrais Method?
The Feldenkrais Method is a learning/teaching method that enables you to utilize the vast potential of your nervous system more fully. Using gentle movement and exploration, (similar to young babies and children) Feldenkrais (rhymes with "rice") allows you to increase your range of motion and improve your flexibility and coordination. It enhances your ability to learn, change, and improve throughout your life, regardless of your age or physical condition.
The Origin of the Name
The Feldenkrais Method is named after Moshe Feldenkrais, a physicist and judo teacher who was born in Russia, lived in France, and died in Israel in 1984. The method has been around since the 1950s, and Moshe taught and worked into his 70s in both Israel and the U.S.
Ways to Learn the Method
There are two ways to learn the Feldenkrais Method. One option is the group class, known as Awareness Through Movement or Relaxercise; another is the private class called Functional Integration. Both classes, which are called “lessons,” last approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Dress is casual and comfortable.
Group Class
The group class is similar to a typical yoga or exercise class. The objective of these lessons is not trimming, toning, building muscles, or a number of repetitions, but the retraining of the brain. Students lie on the floor to counteract the pull of gravity and close their eyes. The movements are very small and easy. Some movements may be simple to do; others may feel strange and unnatural. The beginning and end of class always involve scanning the body to notice changes, areas of tightness, tension, or relaxation.
Private Class
During a private lesson, the student lies on a table while the practitioner guides the body through various movements, communicating with the muscles through their hands. Throughout the session, the practitioner works on possible trouble areas by showing the student alternative movements.
